Phase transitions and shapes of two component membranes and vesicles II : weak segregation limit

چکیده
We investigate equilibrium Shapes of vesicles composed of a mixture of partially miscible amphiphiles embedded in twoand three-dimensional Space. The amphiphilic molecules can diffuse within the membrane and undergo an intramembrane phase separation below a critical temperature. We assume a simple phenomenological coupling between the local relative composition of the amphiphiles and the local curvature of the membrane shape. A linear stability analysis in the vicinity of the critical temperature indicates that a shape instability is induced by the coupling. Using a single mode approximation, we obtained phase diagrams for (I) twodimensional vesicles and (iii three-dimensional axisymmetric vesicles. The equilibrium shape deformations are shown to depend on the phenomenological parameters of our model yielding highly non-trivial vesicle shapes which deviate from spherical-like objects.

Phase transitions and shapes of two component membranes and vesicles I: strong segregation limit
We investigate unilamellar membranes and vesicles composed of an A/B mixture of partially miscible amphiphiles. Assuming a simple bilinear coupling between relative composition and local curvature, and in the strong segregation limit of the A/B mixture, we show for unilamellar open-shape membranes that the competition between sudace tension and curvature results in a phase with a selected perio...

Model phospholipid membranes and vesicles have long provided insight into the nature of confined materials and membranes while also providing a platform for drug delivery. The rich thermodynamic behavior and interesting domain shapes in these membranes have previously been mapped in extensive studies that vary temperature and composition; however, the thermodynamic impact of tension on bilayers...
متن کاملShape Transformations of Free, Toroidal and Bound Vesicles
Shapes and shape transformations of vesicles are considered theoretically within the spontaneous curvature model for three cases. (i) For free vesicles, the whole phase diagram is presented which includes pear-shaped vesicles and a line of limit shapes related to budding. (ii) For toroidal vesicles, three branches of solutions with low energy are found. (iii) An extension of this model to the a...
متن کاملSpatial Segregation in Demography: A Short Review
Abstract. Spatial has always been an inherent component of demography, and demographic processes are inherently spatiotemporal. Recognizing the importance of spatial in general and spatial segregation in particular in demographic analysis has created new positions in demography and its conceptual and analytical frameworks. The notion of spatial segregation refers to the distribution of social...
متن کاملVesicle dynamics in a confined Poiseuille flow: from steady state to chaos.
Red blood cells (RBCs) are the major component of blood, and the flow of blood is dictated by that of RBCs. We employ vesicles, which consist of closed bilayer membranes enclosing a fluid, as a model system to study the behavior of RBCs under a confined Poiseuille flow. We extensively explore two main parameters: (i) the degree of confinement of vesicles within the channel and (ii) the flow str...
